The high energy physics research program at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is directed toward the study of the properties of the most basic constituents of matter and the application of the results of these studies to the understanding of the physical universe.  Experiments using high energy accelerators search for new particles, test current theories, and measure properties of the known particles.  Experiments using cosmic rays address both particle physics and astrophysical issues. A program of research and development of new types of detection instruments expands and improves the capabilities of these experiments.  Theoretical physics research evaluates experimental results in the context of existing theories and projects the experimental consequences of proposed new theories.
