Quantum Discord at the Large Hadron Collider

March 24 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Speakers: Matthew Low (University of Pittsburgh)
The treatment of outgoing particles at high-energy colliders as qubits in a quantum system has recently enabled the application of quantum information tools to high-energy physics. This began with the study of quantum entanglement between a top quark and an anti-top quark, which has already been measured in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Bell nonlocality is also predicted to become observable in this system after several more years of data collection. However, the landscape of quantum correlations extends far beyond entanglement and Bell nonlocality. One of the most fundamental forms of quantum correlation is quantum discord—a purely quantum phenomenon that can arise even in systems that are not entangled. In this talk, I will present how quantum discord can be observed in top–anti-top events at the Large Hadron Collider.
