BYU-Hawaii, Joseph Smith Library Instruction Room
9.00 - 9.45 am Jelena Marcic (UH Manoa)
Intro: 100 years of cosmic ray studies, Current detectors, Major unanswered questions
9.45 - 10.30 Michael Weber (BYU-Hawaii) Muon detectors and visit to detector at BYU-Hawaii What affects rate at which muons are detected?
Counts/min with all 4 counters, Uploading 1st set of data Start data taking with only top 2 of 4 counters Counts/min with only top 2 of 4 counters
10.30 - 11.30
Johannes Adams (Punahou) Intro to cosmic ray analysis using e-Lab, tutorials, making flux plots. Flux plot of previous data with all 4 counters
11.30 - 12.30
Lunch & questions for physicists, Muons and other sources of ionizing radiation
12.30 - 13.30
Uploading 2nd set of data, Flux plot of 2nd set of data and comparison with 1st set
13.30 - 15.00
Analyzing other data and comparing results. What affects flux values?
Preparation: Before coming to the workshop, students should be familiar with some basics about cosmic rays and muons.
A good source is the Cosmic Extremes booklet available at the e-Lab Library/Resources links from the Student page.
Another is the booklet What are Cosmic Rays by Hayanon available at www.stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp/ste-www1/pub/nanda/cosmicrays_e.pdf
In particular, students should be able to answer the following: What are muons? - Where do muons come from? - How are muons detected?
