Laboratory 7 Exercises

1.) Do problem 5.5, parts a, b, and f. For part f, determine which cases are underdamped and which are either overdamped or critically damped. Assume that one of the cases given in part f is the critically damped case. You only need to do the omega = 3 case.

2.) Do problem 5.7, parts a and b.

NOTE: In 5.5 b and 5.7 b, you are asked to find the period of the motion. The period is the time between successive maxima. How do you test for the maximum? You can use the fact that the velocity changes sign at the maximum. You can test for vold*v < 0, where vold is the velocity before the step and v is the velocity after the step.

Summary: Describe the motions of a damped harmonic oscillator and a driven damped harmonic oscillator.
