BEAST SVD Installation Notes from Marc Rosen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The current ladder in BEAST/SVD is a middle ladder. Hence, the next one will be an outer ladder and the radiative effects of heating will most immediately affect the ladder currently installed. The conductive effects of heating should remain the same as present, ie the diode layer is insulated from the ladder mounts, but bonded to the skin. Note that the last 2 times that the SVD quad was removed and replaced, we did it with all the outer drift tube modules in position, therefore not interrupting any gas flows. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The ladder installation is pretty basic, so here is a list of some important things to remember: Gain access to the inner quadrant by removing the skin via the four 4-40 flat head screws at the four outer corners. The slot in the ladder mount was intended to accept 4 blue ribbon cables. The two new ones can either go through the slot or around the ladder mount block. Ladder cables plug into the ABC card with the labels showing on each side. The ABC card & cable were passed through the end-cap slot with the two capacitors removed, which were then re-soldered. The new ABC cable can either go through the slot or below the end cap, as there is room for the cable between the end cap and beam pipe, need be. Running the new cable through the slot would be a much cleaner installation. The new ABC cable should be shielded as I did with the first one. Tanaka-san should go over all cabling w/BEASTs, especially where the new ABC cable plugs into the dock. As well, more cabling may be required to go from the dock to the BEAST cage. The spare SVD block connector that goes to the +/-5 & 8 vdc supply is in one the BEAST spare parts boxes. It is labeled. I have left two spring assemblies w/screws, fastened inside of the ladder mounts in preparation for the next ladder. This is all the mounting hardware you will need for the 2nd ladder. Heat sink grease would be useful. >>>> Avoid touching or letting anything come in contact with the bonding wires!
