The Higgs Boson as a Tool for Discovery

April 30 @ 3:30 pm 5:30 pm

Speakers: Prof. JoAnne Hewett (StonyBrook)

Discovered a decade ago, the Higgs boson offers a unique portal into the laws of nature and any small deviation in its expected properties would constitute a major breakthrough. The full discovery potential of the Higgs will be unleashed by percent and sub-percent level precision studies of the Higgs properties. Such measurements are a top priority in the physics program of future high-energy colliders. High luminosity upgrades to the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), offering ten times more data than previously collected, will provide a compelling laboratory for percent-level measurements of several Higgs properties.  A future electron-positron collider would provide the next outstanding opportunity to investigate the properties of the Higgs in further detail at the sub-percent level in sensitivity and expanding to more property measurements.  Longer term future-generation accelerators, such as a very high-energy hadron collider, bring prospects for even better precision.  I will detail the plans for such future facilities.
