Ice on the Moon

Abstract: The classical theory of lunar ice posits that permanently shadowed craters in the lunar polar regions have accumulated moderate amounts of ice over billions of years. The theoretical predictions are in agreement with the sparse observational data available to date. This presentation will review theoretical ideas about ice on the Moon, including statistical models of micro cold traps, but also non-classical theories such as subsurface cold-trapping which could explain the presence of ice outside of cold traps. A lively lunar exploration program will put these theories to a test in the near future.
