Searching for Quantum Decoherence of B Meson Entanglement at the Belle II Experiment
April 9 @ 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Speakers: Sven Vahsen (University of Hawaii)
Why does a world governed by quantum mechanics look classical on everyday scales? One of the central ideas in addressing this question is quantum decoherence. In this colloquium, I will introduce these ideas from the perspective of experimental particle physics, at a level intended to be accessible to physics undergraduates. I will begin with a playful contrast between classical and quantum mechanics, then introduce the concept of quantum decoherence, and finally discuss ongoing work at the Belle II experiment in Japan, carried out by UH graduate students and postdocs, that searches for possible decoherence in entangled B-meson pairs.
