S.L.Olsen 10/24/95 A First Look at psi'-->pi+pi-k+k- Initial results from an examination of the following psi' decays, psi'-->k*(890)^o k_2*(1432)^o Strong (0.7%) VT mode of the J/psi | | ->k+pi- ->k-pi+ psi'-->k*(890)^o k*(890)^o Violates SU(3) (limit for J/psi) | | ->k+pi- ->k-pi+ psi'-->k1(1271)+ k- + cc AP mode? no PDG entry for J/psi | -->k+/- rho | ->pi+pi- 14% rule expectations: (using acceptance = 0.035 from IHEP psi' group paper) -k*0k_2*0 Br(J/psi--> k*0k_2*0) = (6.7 +- 2.6) 10**-3 Br(k* -> k+pi-) = 2/3 expect: 3.44M x 6.7 10**-3 x 0.14 x 0.24 x (2/3)**2 = 348 events | guess for acceptance -k*0k*0 Br(J/psi-->k*0k*0) < 5 x 10**-4 <--violates flavor SU(3) expect: < 3.44M x 5 10**-4 x .14 x 0.24 x (2/3)**2 < 26 events -k1(1270)+k- no PDG entry for J/psi (but non-strange AP octet decay b1(1235)pi is strong. ----data, cuts, etc: Data: Use all psi' data. Require: 4 charged tracks with |cos theta|<0.74 Sum charge = 0 le 1 trks identified as muons le 1 showering trks (showering trk = ESHC > 0.8 GeV) 4-C fits to pi+pi-pi+pi- and pi+pi-k+k- chisq(pi+pi-pi+pi-) > chisq(pi+pi-k+k-) chisq(pi+pi-k+k-) < 8.0 mpipi < 2.4 GeV <--eliminates feedthrus from mkk < 3.0 GeV <--psi'-->pi+pi-J/psi | -->l+l- mkk > 1.05 GeV <--eliminates phi Unmatched gamma energy<200 MeV "kstar" = k+pi- mass within +/-70 MeV of 896 MeV "rho" = pi+pi- mass within +/-120 MeV of 770 MeV Results: (Fig 1a-d = "pi pi k k results"; Fig 2 = "kstar fit results" Fig 3a-d = "k-rho results" Fig 4 = "k-rho fit results" Fig 5 = "Kstr pi fit results" Fig 6 = "q0 selection" Fig 7 = "q0 fit") -------------k*k* & k*k_2* results------------- -plot pi+pi- mass (Fig 1a, 1 entries/event) -plot k+pi- vs k-pi+ with "rhos" eliminated (Fig 1b) -plot k+/-pi-/+ mass distribution (2 entries/evnt, no rhos) (Fig 1c) -plot k+/-pi-pi+/- mass recoiling against k*(890) (2/event) (Fig 4c). Very strong k* k* signal/ weak k*k_2* signal (if any). -Fit k* recoil spectrum to k*(890) + K_2*(1430) + 3rd order poly get 41.5 +/- 11.7 x 0.5 k*k* and 4.9 +/- 5.2 k*k_2* | (k*k* are double counted) k*k* at (above?) the expected upper limit (SU(3) violated) k*k_2* 30x below expectations (VT suppressed mode) ---------------charged k1(1270) results------- -plot pi+pi- mass(x) vs k+pi+pi- mass(y) (Fig 3a) -projection on pi+pi- mass axis (Fig 3b). rho signal is evident -plot k+pi-/k-pi+ masses (Fig 3c). k*(890) signal is evident -plot k+/-rho0 mass, select rho's and veto events with kpi combinations within +/-50 MeV of the k*. (Fig 3d) -fit k-rho mass spectrum to BW near 1270 plus 3rd-order polynomial (Fig 4). Strong peak, 22.5 +/- 7.3 evnts, but with wrong mass (1.335 vs 1.273 GeV) and width (48 vs 90 MeV). -select events with kpi masses within 90 MeV of the K*(896) and fit to two BW's, one near 1.27 and one near 1.40 (Fig 5). There is some action at low masses, but the fit doesn't assign much significance to it. ---------------neutral mode k1(1270) results------- -look at 4 prong data with net charge = 0 plus 2 or more gammas -4 C fit to psi'--> pi+ k- k0 gamma gamma chisquare<15. ctau > 2mm unmatched neutral energy < 400 MeV -Fig 6a shows gamma gamma mass plot m gamma gamma = m pi0 +/- 35 MeV -Fig 6b k+pi- pi0 mass -Fig 6c k0pi-pi0 mass -Fig 6d 6b + 6c -Fig 7 Fit a narrow peak near 1.33 GeV 22+/- 8 events with Fit mass = 1304 +/- 7 width = 32 +/- 29 MeV
