Slide 1 S.Olsen PICTEL 5/10/96 Comparison of: psi' and J/psi -->omega pi+pi-; omega f_2; gamma f_2 MOTIVATION: -Check IHEP (Li Xinhua) results: Br(psi'-->omega pi+pi-) = (5.56 +/- 0.74 +/- ?) * 10^{-4} Br(psi'-->omega f_2) = (8.1 +/- 5.3 +/- ?) * 10^{-5} Br(psi'-->gamma f_2) ~ 2.3 * 10^{-5} | f_2 mass appeared to be too low (about 1.20 GeV) in the 1994 data DATA: -Use 94 and 95 psi' data 3.44 M psi' decays TECHNIQUE: -Compare psi' decays to those from J/psi's produced via psi'-->pi+pi-J/psi N_evnts(psi'-->X; X-->f.s.) Br(psi'->X) = ----------------------------------------- N_psi' accept'(X) Br(X-->f.s.) Br(J/psi->X) = N_evnts(psi'-->pi+pi-J/psi; J/psi-->X; X-->f.s.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- N_psi' accept(X) Br(X->f.s.) Br(psi'->pi+pi-J/psi) accept(pi+pi-) Here f.s. is the final state accepted in the analysis, accept'(X) (accept(X)) is the acceptance for psi'--> (J/psi-->) X and accept(pi+pi-) is the acceptance for the pi+pi- for the psi'-->pi+pi-J/psi cascade decay. Lots of stuff cancels out in the ratio of branching fractions: Br(psi'-->X) N(psi'->X, etc.) accept'(X) ------------=Br(psi'->pi+pi-J/psi) accept(pi+pi-)---------------- x ---------- Br(J/psi->X) N(J/psi->X, etc) accept(X) Using: Br(psi'->pi+pi-J/psi) = 0.324 +/- 0.026 from the PDG and accept(pi+pi-) = 0.59 for pi+ pi- with |cos_theta|<0.8 (from Fred H.) and assuming accept'(X) = accept(X) (reasonable if we are careful with the choice of cuts), the ratio measurement becomes an event counting experiment: ********************************************* * Br(psi'-->X) N(psi'->X, etc.) * * ------------ = 0.19 x ---------------- * * Br(J/psi->X) N(J/psi->X, etc) * ********************************************* The 14% rule translates into roughly equal numbers of psi and J/psi events.
