Syllabus and Protocols PHYSICS 274: Physics II

420 Watanabe Hall UHM, MWF 0830-0920, Fall 2005

COURSE CONTENT

Physics 274 is an introductory level, calculus-based, undergraduate physics course intended primarily for science and engineering majors. This is the third of three courses; the material this semester covers introductory quantum mechanics, relativity, atomic, nuclear and particle physics, as defined in the text below, Chapters 34-41. You are responsible for all material listed in the Schedule, whether it was covered in class or not. You must read the text as well as come to lecture.

TEXT ``Physics for Scientists and Engineers'', Paul A. Tipler, 5th Edition, Volume 2C , ISBN: 0-7167-0906-6 . Also available (optional) are ``Student Study Guide to Accompany Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 5th Ed.'', ISBN: 0-7167-8331-2
PREREQUISITES UH Physics 151-2 or 170-272 and Math 242, or equivalent.
LECTURE
TIME & PLACE
8:30 - 9:20 AM, MWF in 420 Watanabe Hall, Manoa Campus
Please do not arrive late.
CLASSROOM
PROTOCOL
The lecture hall should be a place for learning while respecting each other. Behavior which distracts others will not be tolerated. There will be no talking other than in public dialogue; cellphones and beepers should be switched off; no eating; no skateboards or scooters; no pets; no reading or sleeping; and no frequent leaving and returning to the classroom. Please, if you are not in class to learn physics, do not interfere with anyone else who wants to get an education. Questions are welcomed. If you did not understand something, chances are that others did not as well.
OFFICE HOURS 9:30 - 10:30 MWF, and by appointment. In a pinch, just stop by. If you missed class, please get the problem assignments or notes from the web. Do come by to discuss the situation if you are having trouble with the class, not just help on a particular problem. Although it would seem to be common courtesy, it appears necessary to ask some people not to call their professor at home, except in emergency.
PROBLEM SETS: Working problems is central to learning physics, a kind of mental calisthenics. If you do not think out the problems you are cheating only yourself. A set of problems will be assigned each day and will be due at the beginning of the next class unless specified otherwise. See the course schedule. Please see http://www.masteringphysics.com and click on the cover of the third book from the left, "Mastering Physics for Young/Freedman University Physics 11e", and log in to do the problems. See the page on study tips and problem solving for more information.
MIDTERMS There will be one 50 minute midterm exam. Tentatively, it will be October 7. You must take the mid-term. It will consist of problems similar to those occurring on the problem sets.
FINAL week of 12-16 December Date and location not known yet.
GRADING
