Eric Szarmes ERIC B. SZARMES
Associate Professor
Room: WAT 212
Office Tel:  808.956.2923
FAX: 808.956.7107

Research Interest:
Prof. Szarmes began his career in the field of free-electron lasers (FELs), and has made fundamental contributions to the theory of FEL mode locking, the generation and application of GHz-rate, phase-coherent optical pulse trains and frequency combs (the 'phase-locked FEL'), and picosecond optical pulse compression techniques using energy-swept electron bunches (the 'chirped-pulse FEL'). Present interests include the theory and design of novel optical resonators for spectroscopy and high-field physics, and cavity modulation techniques for optical resonators.
The theory and design of specialized optical resonators and optical components for frequency combs, high power lasers and applications.
Career History:
  • B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, 1985
  • Ph.D. in Applied Physics, Stanford University, Stanford, California, 1992
  • Faculty member at University of Hawai'i, Manoa since 1998
